I'll welcome the GIMP the day I don't have to do 'sudo port selfupdate'.
My MacPorts days are over.

Well... there are two GUI programs, Pallet (a package manager) and MacPorts Notifier (a menu bar item), which should make things easier (and they both install into /Applications/MacPorts).
Sadly, the Porticus package manager still hasn't been updated to work with MacPorts 2.x and Lion...

Well, things have improved. Macports silently introduced a precompiled binary repository some months ago (http://packages.macports.org). This includes binaries of gimp2-devel (2.7.3) and the stable gimp2 (2.6.11). While The Gimp still has a lot of dependencies, install time is now vastly reduced.

That's good to know! :-)
And - even better... - I just found out that one can build (meta)packages and disk images directly from MacPorts, as detailed here:
http://guide.macports.org/#using.binaries.binary-packages
So, I tried a
$ sudo port mdmg gimp2-devel
which, after some time, resulted in a .dmg disk image (364 MB), a metapackage (372.2 MB) and a package (20 MB) available in the work directory, which in this case is
/opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_graphics_gimp2-devel/gimp2-devel/work
Of course, only the disk image and the metapackage are complete installs of the GIMP, with all the dependencies.
Beware, the metapackage still install into /opt, à la MacPorts: it doesn't give a double-clickable (but one can always make an ad hoc AppleScript or Automator launcher) GUI app into /Applications.

Errata corrige: towards the end, it should be *installs* and *in*...

I love the concept of the single window for GIMP!

However, I hope this development version fixes some long-standing bugs in the main trunk. GIMP's curves have been broken for 3 months now. Macports is great, but sometimes the development is a little sluggish.

Gimp For Os X Lion 10.7

Hmm... sadly, that bug is still present in GIMP 2.7.3 from MacPorts; but the prepackaged 'Gimp on OS X' 2.6.11 version works as expected, without crashing X11.

Gimp is a great program! But, everyone should be aware that 2.6 is the current release while according to the gimp web site:
Please note that the whole 2.7.x series of versions is considered unstable and is not recommended for use in production even though it might just work for you. Our intention is to make development versions available for passionate users who can provide useful feedback to help us fix bugs and streamline implementation of some of the new features. The upcoming v2.8 also introduces a huge amount of API deprecations and additions that have the potential to break existing 3rd party scripts and plug-ins. Please file bugs for all plug-ins and scripts that do work in v2.6, but don't work in 2.7.3. A migration guide for developers will be provided when v2.8 is out.
So, be careful with the development version. That said, development needs use and testing...

The new GIMP 2.8 release is now available, also for OS X (Snow Leopard and Lion); get it from here:

(the GIMP on OS X project).
Very good, indeed! :-)
